While thousands of GTA 6 fans rushed to pre-order the game as soon as pre-orders went live, one Xbox player decided to take a completely different approach.
Instead of paying the full price, Reddit user Financial_Specific24 claims they managed to get the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition for free, saving nearly $100 in the process.
The method isn’t something every player can copy overnight, but it shows how some gamers are using official rewards programs to cut down the cost of expensive new releases.
Financial_Specific24 explained on Reddit that they used the Xbox Mastercard to build up enough reward points to cover the cost of GTA 6 Ultimate Edition.
The card works somewhat like other reward programs, allowing users to collect points when they spend money on eligible purchases.
Those points can then be used toward Xbox and Microsoft Store purchases.
In this case, the player needed 9,999 points to redeem GTA 6 Ultimate Edition without paying the full price.
The biggest advantage came from purchases made through the digital Microsoft Store.
The Xbox Mastercard currently offers 5x card points on eligible Microsoft Store purchases and subscriptions, making it possible to build up points faster if you’re already spending money on Microsoft’s services.
Other purchases can also earn points. Eligible streaming services such as Netflix, Disney Plus, and Spotify can earn 3x points, while eligible food delivery purchases also earn 3x points. Everyday purchases earn 1x points.
Financial_Specific24 said they mainly took advantage of the Microsoft Store rewards.
That included their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which they said was earning them more than 100 points every month.
“It gives you 5x points on all Microsoft Store purchases and subscriptions,” the Reddit user explained.
They also mentioned that their Game Pass Ultimate subscription was renewed every month, helping them steadily build their points balance.
The player also claimed they received a large sign-up offer when they first got the card.
According to them, there was an offer that could provide around 5,000 to 8,000 reward points after spending roughly $300 during the first six months.
That bonus played a major role in helping them reach the amount needed for the free GTA 6 Ultimate Edition.
However, that particular offer isn’t necessarily available to everyone.
Xbox Mastercard promotions can change over time, and the current offer at the time of writing provides $60 worth of points after the first purchase with the card.
Of course, there’s an important catch here.
The Xbox Mastercard is a real credit card, not a simple rewards account. Anyone considering it should make sure they can manage a credit card responsibly and avoid spending money just to earn points.
If you’re already paying for Xbox subscriptions and making regular Microsoft Store purchases, however, the rewards can potentially add up over time.
For Financial_Specific24, those points eventually turned into something much better, a free copy of GTA 6 Ultimate Edition.
With GTA 6 expected to be one of the biggest game launches in years, finding ways to reduce the cost could be especially useful for players who are already spending money on Xbox services.
It also serves as a reminder that you don’t always need to pay full price for a major game if you’re willing to plan ahead and make use of legitimate rewards.
