Discord users are angry over a court-approved subpoena from Take-Two Interactive that could give the publisher access to a large amount of user information as it continues investigating the people behind the GTA 6 leaks.

Take-Two has been trying to identify the person or people operating under the name Cyberleek, after unreleased GTA 6 gameplay appeared online.

As part of the investigation, the publisher filed requests against Discord and Microsoft on August 20.

The Discord subpoena has caused particular concern because it reportedly covers three Discord communities and could involve information from users who were members of those servers, rather than only accounts directly accused of sharing leaked GTA 6 footage.

One of the servers is reportedly connected to popular GTA creator DarkViperAU and has more than 100,000 members.

Take-Two Wants Extensive Discord User Information

According to the filing, Take-Two is seeking a wide range of information about users who were members of the named Discord servers from June 1 onward.

The requested information reportedly includes message logs, IP access records, email addresses, phone numbers, account registration dates, linked accounts and device information.

That broad request is what has caused much of the backlash among Discord users.

A post discussing the subpoena on the Discord subreddit claimed that Judge Andrew L. Carter Jr. had approved Take-Two’s request to obtain information on around 100,000 Discord users.

The wording quickly sparked a strong reaction from the community.

One user wrote, “Nothing is private,” while another argued that the problem wasn’t Take-Two trying to find the GTA 6 leaker, but the way it was attempting to do so.

Another user questioned whether obtaining information from thousands of people to identify a single suspected leaker was reasonable.

Several users also called on Discord to challenge the subpoena.

Take-Two Is Searching for the GTA 6 Leaker

Take-Two’s investigation began after unreleased GTA 6 gameplay and other confidential material started appearing online under the Cyberleek name.

The publisher has described the investigation as “rapidly evolving”, saying it has identified additional Discord accounts that could potentially be connected to the leaks.

The initial subpoena was approved in August. Take-Two later said it was issued on August 21 and was promptly served on Discord.

However, there was some confusion over whether Discord had actually received the subpoena.

Discord marketing director Ryan K. Rigney said several days later that the company had not received it at that point.

He added that Discord would review the subpoena’s validity and scope once it received the document.

It is currently unclear whether Discord has since handed over any user information to Take-Two.

The original subpoena reportedly gave Discord until September 4 to respond, although no public confirmation has been made about any transfer of user data.

A Second GTA 6 Subpoena Is More Targeted

The controversy comes shortly after Judge Carter approved another subpoena aimed at Discord.

Unlike the broader request, the second subpoena is more targeted.

It seeks information about one additional Discord user, more details about a previously identified account, and information connected to the Discord communities mentioned in the first request.

Much of the second filing remains under seal, meaning the public cannot see the full details.

Keeping those details private could prevent suspected GTA 6 leakers from learning what information Take-Two has already uncovered during its investigation.

The second subpoena is also separate from the much broader request that could involve information connected to members of the server with more than 100,000 users.

For now, the biggest concern among Discord users is the scope of the original subpoena.

While many people understand why Take-Two wants to find the person responsible for leaking GTA 6, they argue that collecting personal information from thousands of unrelated users goes too far.

With GTA 6 still one of the most anticipated games in the world, Take-Two appears determined to track down the source of the leaked material.

The coming days could reveal whether Discord challenges the request, complies with it, or reaches another agreement with Take-Two over what information can be handed over.
