Rockstar has revealed that GTA 6 was not fully formed when its first trailer was released, but Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road” helped guide the game’s creative direction.

Nearly three years after GTA 6 Trailer 1 was released, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has shared new details about how the game was taking shape behind the scenes.

According to Nelson, the game was still being developed when the first trailer arrived in December 2023.

However, the Tom Petty song featured in the trailer represented more than just background music.

It became a creative mission statement for what Rockstar wanted GTA 6 to become.

Nelson explained that Rockstar’s development teams do not always begin a new game with every detail already decided.
