Modding has been a big part of the Grand Theft Auto community for years. From new vehicles and realistic graphics to custom missions and roleplay servers, mods have given players countless ways to enjoy GTA beyond what Rockstar originally created.
However, Rockstar has not always been welcoming toward every type of modding. GTA 5 still does not have a Steam Workshop, and some mod projects have faced legal action in the past. This leaves many fans wondering whether GTA 6 will support mods or follow the same approach.
There are reasons to believe Rockstar could offer more opportunities for creators in the future.
The company has acquired a major roleplay platform and introduced new tools that let players create their own GTA Online missions. But that does not mean full mod support for GTA 6 is confirmed.
Here is what we know so far about GTA 6 modding, user-generated content, and the possibility of creating custom experiences in Vice City.
Rockstar Is Giving Players More Ways to Create Content

One of the biggest changes in Rockstar’s approach to community content is the growing focus on user-generated content (UGC). This refers to content created by players rather than the game’s developers.
GTA Online has already taken steps in this direction. Rockstar introduced its Mission Creator, which allows players to build, edit, and share their own missions.
Players can create different objectives, control NPC behavior, and design custom experiences for others to play. Rockstar has also started featuring selected community-created missions through its Community Mission Series.
These tools show that Rockstar is willing to give players more creative freedom within its games.
It is reasonable to wonder whether similar features could appear in GTA 6. However, Rockstar has not confirmed that GTA 6 will include the same Mission Creator or a full set of modding tools.
Player-created missions and traditional mods are also different things, so one does not automatically guarantee the other.
Rockstar Acquired FiveM and RedM in 2023

Another major development came in August 2023, when Cfx.re officially joined Rockstar Games. Cfx.re is the team behind FiveM and RedM, popular platforms that support custom multiplayer experiences and roleplay servers for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
These platforms have helped players build their own communities, create custom content, and enjoy experiences that go far beyond the original games.
Rockstar’s decision to bring Cfx.re into the company was significant. Rather than simply treating the roleplay community as an outside group, Rockstar chose to work with the team responsible for some of its most popular community projects.
However, there is an important detail to remember. Cfx.re stated when the acquisition was announced that its partnership with Rockstar was focused on the FiveM and RedM platforms. The announcement did not confirm any plans for GTA 6 mod support.
Even so, Rockstar’s continued involvement with these communities makes it worth watching how the company handles modding and custom content in its future games.
The Cfx Marketplace Could Be an Important Step

In January 2026, Cfx.re launched the Cfx Marketplace, an online store where creators can share and sell content for FiveM and RedM.
The marketplace includes resources such as props, scripts, maps, and other items that server owners can use in their custom experiences.
This gives creators a more organized way to distribute their work and gives server owners a central place to find community-made content.
Naturally, some GTA fans see this as a possible sign of a more creator-friendly future for Rockstar games.
However, the Cfx Marketplace is currently designed for FiveM and RedM. Rockstar has not announced that it will become a marketplace for GTA 6 mods, and its launch should not be treated as confirmation that a similar store is coming to Vice City.
Still, it demonstrates that Rockstar is willing to support a structured marketplace for community-created content under the right conditions.
Will GTA 6 Mods Be Available at Launch?

This is one of the biggest unanswered questions.
Rockstar’s official GTA 6 website lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the game’s launch platforms. A PC version has not been officially announced on the website, so its release date and availability remain unconfirmed.
Traditional game modding is generally more flexible on PC because players can access and modify game files using community tools. Console games usually operate within stricter platform restrictions, making the same type of file-based modding much harder.
That means the modding experience could depend heavily on which platforms GTA 6 eventually supports and what tools Rockstar provides.
If a PC version arrives later, it may offer more opportunities for traditional mods, as has happened with previous GTA games. However, that is a possibility rather than a confirmed GTA 6 feature.
At launch, players should not assume that they will be able to install custom vehicles, replace character models, change graphics, or use third-party scripts.
Could GTA 6 Support Mods on Consoles?

Console modding is another interesting possibility, but it is difficult to predict what Rockstar might allow.
The Mission Creator in GTA Online already shows that players can build and share custom missions on supported consoles and PC platforms. This proves that community-created experiences do not always require unrestricted access to game files.
GTA 6 could potentially offer similar creation tools, allowing players to build missions, design challenges, or share other types of approved content.
A more advanced system could give players considerable creative freedom without allowing them to modify the entire game. However, Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 creator platform, so we cannot say what it will include.
A system that lets players build missions would also be different from installing traditional mods such as custom cars, new weapons, graphical upgrades, or major gameplay changes.
For now, console mod support in GTA 6 remains unconfirmed.
Could GTA 6 Have a Roblox-Style Creator System?

Some players hope GTA 6 will take user-generated content much further than previous games.
Imagine being able to create entire missions, build custom locations, change NPC behavior, and share new experiences with other players. A powerful creator system could make the game more than just a fixed set of missions and activities.
The tools in GTA Online provide an early example of how Rockstar could expand player creativity. But a Roblox-style system, where players can build entirely different experiences within the same game, would be a much bigger step.
There is currently no official evidence that GTA 6 will offer this level of customization.
It is an interesting possibility, but it should be treated as speculation until Rockstar reveals more about the game’s creator tools or online features.
Will Rockstar Allow Every Type of GTA 6 Mod?
Even if GTA 6 supports modding in some form, that does not mean every mod will be allowed.
Rockstar could choose to support certain types of community content while restricting modifications that affect online security, violate its policies, or create problems for other players.
The company has previously taken different approaches to modding, roleplay servers, and community-created content. Its acquisition of Cfx.re and the launch of the Cfx Marketplace suggest that it is willing to support some creator communities, but they do not mean unrestricted modding will be permitted.
We also need to separate single-player mods from online modifications. Custom vehicles or graphics in a single-player experience are very different from cheats or modifications that give players an unfair advantage in multiplayer.
Until Rockstar shares its GTA 6 modding policies, we cannot know which types of modifications will be permitted, whether official tools will be available, or how the company will handle third-party projects.
Will GTA 6 Support Mods?

GTA 6 mod support is possible, but Rockstar has not confirmed it. The company’s work with Cfx.re, the Cfx Marketplace, and the Mission Creator in GTA Online gives players reasons to be interested in what comes next.
However, none of these developments proves that GTA 6 will launch with traditional mods or support them on consoles.
The most important questions remain unanswered. Will Rockstar release official modding tools? Will there be a dedicated marketplace for GTA 6 community content? Will a future PC version allow the same level of customization that made GTA 5 so popular with modders?
We will need an official announcement before those questions can be answered.
For now, the best approach is to separate Rockstar’s confirmed creator features from what fans hope to see. GTA 6 could eventually offer exciting new ways to customize the experience, but full mod support should not be considered guaranteed.
If Rockstar gives players the right tools and freedom, the community could help keep Vice City interesting long after the main story ends.
