GTA 6 could be changing one of the biggest parts of the GTA formula in a way fans are only now starting to realize.
While Rockstar has already shown that players can switch between Jason and Lucia, a new discussion among GTA 6 fans is focusing on something that could be even more important, the two characters may be able to stay together while exploring the open world.
In previous GTA games with multiple protagonists, characters generally lived separate lives outside of missions.
Players could switch between them, but they weren’t normally walking around the world together as a pair.
GTA 6 appears to be taking a very different approach.
Jason and Lucia are partners in both crime and their personal lives, and fans believe Rockstar has designed the game around allowing the two to spend much more time together during free roam.
That could have a much bigger effect on GTA 6 than it first sounds.
Imagine driving across Leonida with Jason behind the wheel while Lucia sits in the passenger seat, talking about what is happening around them.
Instead of exploring the massive map alone, players could have a companion with them for parts of their journey.
This could also make GTA 6’s open world feel much more alive.
One of the biggest things fans are excited about is the possibility of constant conversations between Jason and Lucia while simply traveling around the map.
Rockstar already showed in Red Dead Redemption 2 how much character dialogue can add to long journeys, and GTA 6 could take a similar idea into a much more modern setting.
The pair could potentially comment on locations, people and situations they encounter while driving or walking around Leonida.
There is also a gameplay benefit.

When Jason and Lucia are together, players could potentially use both characters during combat and other situations.
The Extended Look already showed Jason providing cover with a rifle while Lucia moved forward, showing how useful having two characters nearby can be.
That could make free-roam encounters very different depending on whether players are alone or with their partner.
It could also change how GTA 6 side missions work.
Rockstar may need to account for three different situations: Jason exploring alone, Lucia exploring alone, or both characters being together.
That could mean certain encounters have different dialogue or animations depending on who the player arrives with.
Of course, Rockstar has not confirmed that every mission or activity will support both characters at the same time.
Some story and side missions will likely still be designed specifically around Jason or Lucia.

But even having the option to spend large parts of free roam together would be a major change.
The relationship system could make this even more interesting.
Players will reportedly be able to influence how close Jason and Lucia become, with their relationship potentially developing as players spend time together.
Activities such as working out, kayaking and other dates can help build their bond.
That means keeping the two together during free roam could become more than just a gameplay choice.
It could also become part of how players experience their relationship.
Fans have already started imagining what it would be like to spend an entire in-game day exploring Leonida with both characters, listening to their conversations and simply seeing where the road takes them.
And that’s perhaps the most exciting part.
GTA 6 may finally let players experience the open world with a true partner instead of always exploring alone.
Rockstar has not explained exactly how often Jason and Lucia can stay together in free roam, so players will have to wait for the full game to understand the limits of the system.
Still, if the feature works the way fans are expecting, it could make GTA 6’s open world feel completely different from GTA 5.
And with GTA 6 releasing on November 19, 2026, players won’t have to wait much longer to find out just how much Jason and Lucia can do together.
