GTA 6 was apparently going to make players do their grocery shopping, but Rockstar eventually decided the system was too complicated and could turn everyday survival into a chore.

Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson revealed that the developers experimented with a much deeper grocery system during GTA 6’s development.

The idea was to let Jason and Lucia buy groceries from stores, take them home and actually restock their refrigerator.

It sounds like a small feature, but Rockstar apparently went surprisingly far with it.

The team had even created systems for stores where players could purchase different products and bring them home.

The groceries would then be used to replenish the refrigerator.

However, the idea eventually hit the chopping block.

GTA 6 Almost Had a Full Grocery System

According to Nelson, Rockstar tested a system where players could actually buy food and stock the fridge at home.

This wasn’t simply going to be another animation where Jason walks into a supermarket and magically leaves with food.

The developers had created specifications for stores and the products players could purchase before taking them home.

The system also connected to GTA 6’s broader food and character-body mechanics.

What players eat and how often they exercise can affect Jason and Lucia’s bodies, health and stamina, making food more important than it was in previous GTA games.

But Rockstar eventually decided that forcing players to manage groceries added too much complexity.

Nelson explained that the team is always trying to find the right balance between realism and ease of play, and the grocery system didn’t fit that balance.

In other words, Rockstar didn’t want GTA 6 to become Grocery Shopping Simulator.

Rockstar Didn’t Want GTA 6 to Feel Like a Chore

This decision actually says a lot about how Rockstar is approaching GTA 6.

The game is packed with realistic details, and Rockstar clearly wants players to feel like they’re living in a believable version of Vice City and Leonida.

But there’s a difference between making a world feel realistic and forcing players to perform every boring part of everyday life.

Imagine spending several hours playing GTA 6, only to discover that Jason’s refrigerator is empty.

You would then have to drive to a supermarket, walk around looking for food, pay for it, drive back home and restock the fridge before getting back to whatever you were actually doing.

The first few times might be fun.

After dozens of hours, it could become incredibly repetitive.

That’s seemingly the problem Rockstar wanted to avoid.

Food Is Still Important in GTA 6

The grocery system being removed doesn’t mean food has been completely ignored in GTA 6.

Players will still be able to eat, buy food and interact with the game’s food systems.

The difference is that Rockstar has simplified the process so players aren’t constantly worrying about keeping their refrigerator stocked.

This fits with the studio’s broader approach to GTA 6.

Rockstar appears willing to add realistic mechanics when they actually give players something interesting to do, while removing systems that add realism without adding much fun.

The decision also explains why some seemingly simple interactions in GTA 6 are more detailed than others.

The developers aren’t just trying to simulate real life. They’re deciding which parts of real life are actually worth turning into gameplay.

GTA 6 Could Have Been Even More Realistic

The grocery system is another example of just how far Rockstar has pushed GTA 6’s realism during development.

We’ve already seen the game introduce or expand systems involving food, exercise, vehicle refueling, navigation and other everyday activities.

Some of those features have already sparked debate among fans, particularly players who worry that too much realism could slow down the fast-paced GTA experience.

Rockstar seems to understand that concern.

Instead of throwing every experimental feature into the final game, the developers are apparently cutting anything that starts feeling more like work than entertainment.

And honestly, that’s probably a good thing.

Nobody wants to stop in the middle of an intense GTA 6 mission because their character suddenly needs to go buy milk.

GTA 6 is trying to make Vice City feel alive, not make players live an actual second life.
