Rockstar Games has revealed an important detail about GTA 6’s retail “physical” edition, and it’s something PlayStation 5 players may want to know before placing a pre-order.
Unlike traditional boxed games, GTA 6’s physical edition doesn’t include a game disc.
Instead, buyers receive a download code inside the box and those codes don’t work the same way across every platform.
According to Rockstar’s official guidance, PlayStation 5 download codes are region-locked.
That means players should purchase the game from a retailer in the same country or region as their PlayStation Network account.
For example, someone with a UK PSN account who imports a cheaper copy from another region could find that the included code cannot be redeemed, leaving them unable to access the game without creating a matching regional account or buying another copy.
The situation is different on Xbox.
Rockstar says Xbox Series X|S download codes are not region-locked, making imported retail copies much easier to use regardless of where they were purchased.
For players who regularly buy games from overseas retailers to save money, Xbox appears to offer considerably more flexibility.
Another detail that’s attracted attention concerns the Japanese version of GTA 6.
Due to local regulations, download codes included with Japanese PS5 retail copies expire 170 days after the game’s launch.
However, Rockstar has clarified that this expiry only applies in Japan and does not affect physical editions sold in other regions.
The update has sparked fresh debate among fans, particularly as Rockstar has already confirmed that GTA 6’s boxed edition contains no physical game disc.
Many collectors had hoped the retail release would include a traditional disc, but the company has instead opted for a code-in-a-box approach.
Online, some players have expressed frustration over region-locked PlayStation codes, arguing that it limits consumer choice and makes importing games far less practical.
Others have pointed to the growing shift towards digital distribution, saying the differences between platforms highlight how digital ownership continues to evolve.
Rockstar has advised players to check their platform and account region carefully before purchasing a retail copy, especially if ordering from international retailers.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 set to be one of the biggest game launches in history, that small code inside the box could end up being far more important than many fans initially realised.
