A growing number of PlayStation fans are planning to stay away from their PS5 consoles for an entire week as concerns over the future of physical games continue to spread.

The campaign, known as #PSBlackout, is asking players not to play games, buy anything from the PlayStation Store, or even sign into their PS5 between 23 August and 30 August.

The protest comes after reports claimed that Sony could phase out physical game releases by 2028.

While Sony has not officially confirmed those reports, many fans believe the company is moving towards an all-digital future, and they want to make their voices heard before that happens.

The message behind the campaign goes beyond physical games.

Organisers say they feel PlayStation has become more disconnected from its community over the past few years.

They point to issues such as the company’s live-service plans, the lack of support for PS VR2, the cancellation of fan events, and the absence of classic PlayStation series like SOCOM, Sly Cooper, Resistance, and Twisted Metal.

However, supporters say the possible end of physical games is what finally pushed them to take action.

Instead of asking players to boycott a specific game or product, the organisers are calling for a complete break from PlayStation for seven days.

They believe that if enough people take part, Sony will notice the community’s concerns.

The campaign also highlights a bigger discussion happening across the gaming industry.

Many players still prefer physical games because they like owning a disc they can keep, lend to friends, or sell later.

They also believe physical copies are better for preserving games in the future.

On the other hand, digital games are tied to an online account, which means players rely on digital stores and platform services to access their purchases.

Others argue that digital gaming is simply the future.

It is cheaper for companies to distribute games digitally, and many players now choose downloads instead of buying discs.

At the moment, Sony has not announced any official plans to stop selling physical PlayStation games by 2028, and the company has not responded to the #PSBlackout campaign.

Even so, the movement shows that many PlayStation fans are worried about where gaming is heading.

Whether the protest grows into something bigger remains to be seen, but it has already started a fresh conversation about game ownership, physical media, and the future of PlayStation.
