Microsoft is preparing a major move for Rockstar Games’ upcoming blockbuster, Grand Theft Auto VI. During a recent internal company meeting, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees that the company is pulling off a feat “no other platform holder is doing.” Sources close to Microsoft’s plans revealed that this comment referred to a newly secured agreement bringing GTA 6 streaming rights to Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch.

Hopes Dashed for PC Players

Because Rockstar Games has not yet announced a PC version for GTA 6, the streaming deal initially sparked excitement among PC players, who hoped it would offer a way to play the game without buying an Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5.

However, those hopes were quickly dashed when Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that the deal is neither exclusive nor designed to bring GTA 6 streaming to PCs. Instead, the arrangement appears tailored strictly for Xbox console streaming, which may leave out the web browsers and alternative apps that typically support Xbox Cloud Gaming. On October 6, Xbox officially issued a correction confirming that the deal is non-exclusive and will not support PC streaming.

Upcoming Changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming

The timing of the GTA 6 announcement coincides with significant operational updates to Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting in November, Microsoft will implement monthly limits on streaming hours:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours per month
  • Premium Subscribers: 10 hours per month
  • Essential Subscribers: 5 hours per month

Alongside these caps, Microsoft is introducing a pay-as-you-go option, enabling players to buy additional streaming time without needing a full Game Pass subscription. While Microsoft has not yet clarified how this flexible option will interact with GTA 6 or which devices will ultimately be supported, it could provide a viable path for eligible players eager to experience the game through the cloud.

A Glimpse into Project Helix

During the same internal meeting, Sharma also touched upon Project Helix, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware. Describing it as a “family of devices,” she reinforced the idea that Microsoft is pursuing a diversified hardware ecosystem rather than committing to a single traditional console.

This vision aligns with the multi-year partnership Microsoft struck with AMD last year to build future Xbox hardware, including next-generation consoles. While Project Helix remains separate from the immediate GTA 6 streaming agreement, it underscores Microsoft’s broader, long-term ambitions for the future of its gaming platform.
