GTA 6 Will Reuse GTA 5 Ideas, Says Ex-Rockstar Producer

Ex-Rockstar Producer Says GTA 5 Ideas Could Return in GTA 6, But Not in the Way Fans Expect.

Some ideas that never made it into Grand Theft Auto V could eventually appear in Grand Theft Auto VI, according to former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio.

However, fans hoping to see cut GTA 5 missions restored in GTA 6 may want to temper their expectations.

Speaking on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Ricchio explained that while Rockstar often revisits old concepts, actually transferring unfinished missions or gameplay content between games becomes far more difficult when the underlying technology changes.

Good Ideas Can Live On

When asked whether content cut from GTA 5 could resurface in GTA 6, Ricchio said the answer is yes—but with an important caveat.

He revealed that Rockstar has previously reused ideas from canceled projects.

In one example, missions originally created for an unannounced Rockstar title that was eventually canceled were later adapted for Grand Theft Auto IV.

According to Ricchio, this was possible because the projects were built on similar technology, making it much easier to move content between them.

The same principle applies to ideas from GTA 5. If Rockstar believes a scrapped feature is worth revisiting, the concept itself can survive long after the original version is abandoned.

Why GTA 6 Is Different?

While the idea may carry over, the original mission almost certainly won’t.

Ricchio explained that modern game development relies heavily on the technology powering each title.

Missions are made up of scripts, animations, AI behaviors, physics systems, audio, character models, and level design—all built specifically for a game’s engine.

Since GTA 6 is Rockstar’s first title built specifically for current-generation consoles, its technology differs significantly from GTA 5’s.

That means developers can’t simply copy an old mission into the new game and expect it to work.

Instead, any returning content would need to be recreated from the ground up using GTA 6’s systems.

Don’t Expect the Agent Trevor DLC to Return

Ricchio’s comments have already sparked speculation across the GTA community, with some fans wondering whether long-rumored canceled content such as the Agent Trevor DLC could finally appear in GTA 6.

However, that’s not what the former producer was suggesting.

His point was that ideas can be reused, not that unfinished GTA 5 files are waiting to be reactivated.

If a familiar mission, gameplay mechanic, or side activity appears in GTA 6, it will likely be because Rockstar developers remembered a strong concept and chose to redesign it for the new game rather than restoring unused content from 2013.

Rockstar Has Decades of Unused Ideas

Like many major game studios, Rockstar leaves a considerable amount of content on the cutting room floor during development.

Features, missions, and even nearly finished gameplay systems are often removed because they don’t meet the studio’s quality standards or simply don’t fit within the final release.

That doesn’t mean those ideas disappear forever.

Rockstar now has decades of unused concepts from across the Grand Theft Auto series, giving developers a vast library of inspiration for future games.

What It Means for GTA 6?

As excitement continues to build ahead of GTA 6’s launch, players can expect dataminers to closely examine every file after release.

If similarities to previously rumored GTA 5 content are discovered, many will likely claim that Rockstar restored cut content.

Ricchio’s comments suggest a more likely explanation.

Rather than reviving old missions, Rockstar may simply be reimagining good ideas with modern technology, rebuilding them from scratch to fit GTA 6’s new engine and gameplay systems.

It’s a subtle but important distinction and one that helps explain how Rockstar continues to evolve the series while preserving ideas that were simply ahead of their time.

As of now, Rockstar Games has not confirmed whether any scrapped GTA 5 concepts will appear in GTA 6.
