Rumors are swirling that GTA 6 could come with a price tag that sets a new industry standard.
While Rockstar hasn’t commented on the speculation, many believe that due to the game’s massive scale and high development costs, it could retail for over $100—well above the usual $70 price for AAA titles.
This potential price hike has fans concerned, but some developers think it might be justified.
Michael Douse, Director of Publishing for Baldur’s Gate 3, shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). He believes that Rockstar could change the pricing trend with GTA 6.
Douse pointed out that making games is more expensive than ever, and considering the size and depth of GTA 6, it might make sense for it to cost more than $70.
He suggested that the gaming industry could be waiting for Rockstar to set this new pricing model before other studios follow suit.
What Do We Know About GTA 6?
Even though Rockstar teased GTA 6 at the end of 2023, they’ve kept most details under wraps. One of the biggest rumors is that the game has a budget of over $1 billion, but this hasn’t been confirmed by Rockstar or publisher Take-Two.
This rumor is a big reason why people think the base version of GTA 6 could cost $100, which would be a significant jump from current pricing trends.
As for the game itself, GTA 6 will take players back to Vice City, a location inspired by Miami, Florida.
It will also introduce the series’ first-ever playable female character, Lucia, who gets involved in a Bonnie and Clyde-style relationship with an unnamed male partner. Together, they’ll commit various crimes, though their motivations are still unclear.
Rockstar has set a 2025 release date for GTA 6, with Take-Two’s earnings calls hinting at a third-quarter launch. However, this hasn’t been officially confirmed. We can expect more news in the coming months as the release date gets closer.
