If you’ve been dreaming about London based map return in a future Grand Theft Auto game, there’s some bad news for you. According to Rockstar Games’ former co-founder, Dan Houser, he doesn’t think the franchise will return to the United Kingdom any time soon.
This may come as a surprise, especially to fans who recall the old days of Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 on the PlayStation. For many, that was their first taste of the chaotic, top-down GTA experience set in the streets of Britain.
I still remember playing GTA: London 1969 as a kid and having no clue what I was doing — just running around, causing mayhem, and somehow convincing random NPCs to join me. It wasn’t until Grand Theft Auto III came out that I realized GTA games actually had story missions!
Because Rockstar Games originally started in the UK, many fans have been hoping for a return to British streets in a future Grand Theft Auto title. But unfortunately, Dan Houser’s recent comments have dashed those hopes.

In an interview on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Houser explained why a GTA game set outside the United States might not work.
“For a full GTA game, we always felt there was so much Americana built into the series that it would be hard to make it work in London or anywhere else,” Houser said. “You needed guns, larger-than-life characters, and that exaggerated view of America. That was a big part of what made GTA… GTA.”
So, it looks like Rockstar isn’t planning a London comeback anytime soon. If fans really want to experience a British version of GTA again, they might have to create their own version, just like the modders behind Fallout: London are doing for that series.
Funny enough, things would come full circle if that happened — since Rockstar itself used modding tools to create GTA: London 1969 all those years ago.
