The CEO of Take-Two has said that the gaming industry is steadily shifting toward PC, even though GTA 6 is still set to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
In an interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box, Strauss Zelnick explained that the video game business is trending toward openness rather than closed ecosystems — but that console-style gaming is not going away anytime soon.
“I think it’s moving towards PC and the business is moving towards open rather than closed,” Zelnick said.
“But if you define console as the property, not the system, then the notion of a very rich game that you engage in for many hours and play on a big screen — that’s never going away.”

In the past, the video game industry depended heavily on consoles. Gaming without a console was almost unimaginable.
But today, the future of video game consoles has become a major topic in the industry. Microsoft is expected to release a PC/console hybrid as its next-gen Xbox — essentially combining a console inside a PC.
Meanwhile, Sony is rumored to be preparing a more traditional PS6, and Nintendo continues to stick firmly to its long-standing hardware strategy, supported by its strong library of exclusive titles.
Zelnick’s comments come alongside the announcement of the NextGen Stream Machine, a game-focused PC designed to be more accessible than traditional desktop computers.

With its sleek, tube-light design and StreamOS onboard, it clearly signals that PC gaming is pushing forward, even ahead of Microsoft’s own reported next-gen console plans.
Still, Microsoft Gaming boss Phil Spencer welcomed the Steam Machine announcement.
“Gaming moves forward when players and developers have more ways to play and create, especially across open platforms,” Spencer tweeted.
“Expanding access across PC, console, and handheld devices reflects a future built on choice — core values that have guided Xbox’s vision from the start. As one of the largest publishers on Steam, we welcome new options for players to access games everywhere. Congrats on today’s announcement.”
