Rockstar Games has recently laid off between 30 and 40 employees across its United Kingdom and Canada studios, just as Grand Theft Auto 6 was approaching its anticipated release. Earlier this year, the studio confirmed that GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026. However, following the layoffs, rumors have circulated throughout the gaming community suggesting the release date might be delayed.
Analysts have noted that ongoing development challenges, coupled with Rockstar’s full return-to-office policies, could increase the risk of further delays. According to some reports, the recent layoffs affected staff who were directly involved in GTA 6’s production.
The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain claimed the dismissals were connected to employees’ efforts to unionize. “All of the affected employees were part of a private union chat group on Discord,” the union stated, calling the move “one of the most blatant acts of union-busting in gaming history.”
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, denied the allegations. A spokesperson said the employees were terminated for “gross misconduct, and for no other reason,” adding that Take-Two continues to support Rockstar’s “ambitions and approach.”
The layoffs follow a period of internal conflict within Rockstar’s offices. In 2024, the company implemented a mandatory five-day workweek after a major GTA 6 leak. At the time, Rockstar stated that the change was necessary to protect sensitive development materials and ensure quality control.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is without a doubt one of the most anticipated video games ever, currently scheduled for release in May 2026. However, some suspect that recent developments could cause a delay. For now, fans can only hope there are no setbacks and wait for official updates from Rockstar.
